Our new chicken coop

We took an important step in our journey towards PFAS free eggs: our newly constructed elevated chicken coop, or "Chick Inn", as the kids have coined it. Construction was completed on July 20, and we moved the chickens in that same evening.

Our new raised chicken coop, the Chick Inn

The idea is simple: By housing the chickens on a raised bed, we can create a controlled environment, ensuring the inputs to the chickens are PFAS-free.

But the Chick Inn is just a start. To maximize the chances that PFAS levels in our backyard eggs will come down we are doing the following:

  • We are feeding the chickens water from our Reverse Osmosis filter, and serve it in a metal water dispenser
  • We sent soil samples to the lab to make sure the new soil we bought is PFAS free. If it turns out that our new soil has elevated PFAS levels we will remove it and continue trying out and testing new soil types until we have found a source of reliable PFAS free soil.
  • We will continue testing chicken feeds and only use brands that prove to be PFAS free
  • We are starting to look into ways to farm clean worms, as this seems to be one of the major contributor to PFAS in chickens and their eggs. Currently the chickens don't have access to worms in their raised coop, but we would like to find a way to bring (PFAS free) worms back into their diet.

We are excited that we have started to take meaningful action on the way to clean & healthy eggs!
